Method
- Slice the cucumber, ginger, and lemon. Remove all lemon seeds to prevent bitterness. You can peel the ginger if you prefer, but leaving the skin on provides more nutrients (just wash well).
- Add the sliced ingredients to a pitcher of cold water.
- Use a muddler or wooden spoon to lightly mash the ingredients to help release their natural oils and flavors. Aim to bruise them gently, not pulverize them.
- Chill and infuse in the refrigerator for a few hours for a stronger flavor profile, or serve immediately over ice for a lighter taste.
Notes
- General: Feel free to experiment with different citrus fruit. Try adding fresh herbs like basil or mint. Add as much of these ingredients as you like for a stronger taste of any one flavor.
- Fridge Storage: This stores in the refrigerator safely for 3 days. It stores at room temperature for 1 day.
- Freezer Tips: If you'd like, freeze your citrus in the freezer overnight and use in your water like ice cubes. You can also freeze the water itself: strain the infused water and freeze in popsicle molds or ice cube trays. Once frozen, move to a sealable plastic or silicone bag. For the best flavor, use frozen infused water within 3-4 weeks.
